The Effects of the Role Stress and Emotional Labor on Burnout of Caregivers at Long-term Care Facilities for the Elderly : Mediating Effects of Mindfulness

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of role stress and emotional labor of caregivers at Long-term care facilities for the elderly on the burnout and to test the relationship that mindfulness is a significant mediator of the variables. As a result of literature review, a proposal structural equation model concerning the aforementioned variables has been identified. The present study employing the SEM procedure etc. The research hypothesis was analyzed by statistical analysis such as structural equation model analysis. The major results of the study are as follows. First, it was found that role stress, emotional labor, and mindfulness have a direct effect on burnout. Second, the emotional labor of the caregivers has a directly effect on the mindfulness, but role stress does not directly effect on the mindfulness. Third, when mindfulness is mediated, emotional labor of caregivers effect burnout, but role stress does not. However, the mediation effects(indirect effect) of mindfulness was significant in the relationship between caregiver's emotional labor and burnout. Based on these results, the implications and limitations of this study and suggestions for subsequent research were discussed.
